General information about Hungary

Budapest, one of the most beautiful historical capitals in Europe, situated on the banks of the Danube, will host the summer school. The architectural beauty with its monuments from neo-classic through baroque to eclectic art nouveau is prevalent in the city. Budapest is also world famous for its artistic abundance of concerts, operas, recitals, galas and exhibitions. The warm hospitality of people, excellent food and wine reliable and frequent public transportation, vivid cultural life, rich museums attract millions of visitors every year. Visitor friendly visa policy, value-for-the-price services and goods, and pleasant climate make Hungary one of the most popular meeting venues worldwide. 

  •  Official Language

The language of the school is English, no simultaneous translation will be available. The official language of Hungary is Hungarian. Although most young people speak English, learning a few basic Hungarian terms is fun and can broad your linguistic horizon. This page gives you some basic information on the Hungarial language and helps you take the first few steps.

  • Visas

From December 21, 2007 Hungary is a member of the Schengen Area, and applies the Schengen legislation in full. The following document on the webpage of the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs describes citizens from which countries require visa to enter Hungary and the process of applying for a visa is described here.

If you are not sure whether you need a visa or not then please contact the Hungarian consulate in your home country. They can also give you further information about the visa application procedure.

  • Insurance

The Organizers of the Summer School do not provide insurance and do not take responsibility for any loss, accident or illness that might occur during the School or in the course of travel to or from the meeting site. It is, therefore, the responsibility of the participants to check their coverage with their insurance provider.

  • Bank, Currency, Credit Cards

The unit of currency is the Hungarian Forint (HUF), denoted as "Ft" by the Hungarians. International credit cards (AmEx, EC/MC, Visa) are accepted at most hotels, restaurants and shops. ATMs are available at the Airport and all over the city. (1 EUR is approx. 300 HUF)

  • Weather

Hungary is in the temperate zone, the weather in July is usually nice and warm. Daily temperature ranges from 27°C to 32°C (81F to 90F) and the relative humidity is below 40%.

  • Voltage

The electricity supply in Hungary is 230 V AC (50 Hz)
